I’m on this kick of watching things set in San Francisco. During my Valentine’s Day Hangover Weekend of ‘09 I watched a number of episodes of Party of Five, Fox’s mid-90’s under the radar “hit” (I use the term loosely) about a family of orphans that must carve a path for themselves in the tepid world of flannel shirts and high-waisted denim (as I describe this, I see all the more clearly how the 90’s are coming back) and the not-so tepid world of alcoholism, dead parents, and domestic abuse. The show was a big sob fest and it propelled Neve Cambell and Jennifer Love Hewitt’s careers quickly, though not sustainably, but it took a change of decades for Matthew Fox (older, brooding brother Charlie) and Lacey Chabert (nasally-voiced, annoying little sister Claudia) to recover in Lost and Mean Girls, respectively, both circa 2004. The show kind of sucks because it’s always pulling at the heartstrings with little to no substance or direction (the 5 Salinger kids are orphaned when their parents are killed in a car crash, and that’s probably the best of their problems; seriously, things only get worse for them as the seasons go on), but when you think your head might just explode and you’re convinced your blood will permanently be tainted with booze, it’s fine, almost swell, and puts things into perspective—I might have been hungover as fuck and reeling from a day of shitty people and humiliating myself in front of coworkers but at least I can still call the parents whenever I feel like it! My favorite thing is to look for places I frequent or silly little local references I might get. The closest I’ve gotten though is a reference to the Muni.
In addition to Party of Five, I just realized the CBS 90’s cop drama that featured the likes of Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, and Steve “Stone Cold” Austin, Nash Bridges, also took place in San Francisco! The fam sometimes watched it sometimes, Nash had a yellow 1971 Plymouth Barracuda, and that’s about all I can say based on the quick Wikipedia search I did. Charmed, a late 90’s WB hit about witches that sort of revived the careers of Shannon Doherty and Alyssa Milano, also took place in SF. I don’t know if I can handle thinking about that right now though.
